Prevention and Awareness Information talks, workshops and training for children and adults are conducted regularly at schools, libraries and other organisations. These events are interactive and engaging, allowing participants to reflect on and share their own experiences. Each workshop has a critical learning component that is relevant and empowering to children and adults. The topics covered include:

  • Signs and symptoms of child abuse, dealing with disclosures and reporting procedures
  • Child abuse: types of abuse, body safety, inappropriate sexualised behaviour and who do you tell
  • Children’s rights and responsibilities
  • Parenting skills: understanding your child’s feelings and behaviour, stages of development, place in the family, building your child’s self-esteem, positive discipline versus punishment, among other topics
  • Positive discipline in the school context
  • Bullying: types of bullying, dealing with bullying, understanding the bully and stories about well-known people who survived bullying
  • Teenage sexuality: stages of adolescent development from puberty to adulthood, the challenges, teenage relationships, discovering romantic love, decisions around sex, consequences of sex, sexual harassment
  • Online safety – Understanding social media and how to stay safe
  • Life skills: self-awareness and self-esteem, identity and peer pressure, relationships and high-risk behaviour, prejudice and discrimination, spirituality
  • Ad hoc requests relating to children’s issues
